Martins scores twice to lift Knights over Gusties

Freshman Paris Martins scored two goals to lift Wartburg to a 2-1 victory at Gustavus Adolphus three days after scoring the game-winner in a 2-1 win over Carthage.

Martins tied the game at one in the 56th minute, two minutes after the Golden Gusties (5-2-1) took a 1-0 lead on Patrick Roth’s goal first goal of the season.

He then scored the eventual winner in the 71st minute, his fifth goal of the season. Zubeen Azari assisted both goals.

The Knights, ranked No. 7 in the latest NSCAA North Region rankings, were outshot 15-10 by the region 6th-ranked Golden Gusties. Cade Shatzer made six saves for Wartburg.

Three yellow cards were handed out including two to Wartburg players. Kyle Sprain and Connor Johnson were each cautioned.

Wartburg opens its Iowa Conference campaign Saturday at Coe (4-2-1).
