Wartburg College is spreading orange across Iowa through their car’s license plates. The college has the highest number of private college affiliated license plates in the state at 389.

Central College has the second most at 324, followed by Drake University with 192 and then trailed by Luther College with 157 plates, said Wartburg College Alumni Office Assistant Event Planner Megan Nuehring.

Although other universities have more college affiliated license plates, Wartburg does have the most custom plates in the state.

Wartburg College junior Sammi Bruett’s parents purchased her a custom Wartburg license plate for her at the end of the school year last year.

She said the plates are more than just a car decoration.

“People comment on my license plate all the time,” Bruett said. “Wartburg seems to have a positive reputation.”

Nuehring said the orange plates promote Wartburg and create a community in other places with those who have Wartburg ties. She said the message on the plates serve as a reminder of alum’s college days.

Some of the plates say things like graduation years and “playterm” and “UKnight” in addition to references from academic or extra curricular events that grads may have participated in while at Wartburg.

Nuerhing said she is from Illinois and does not have a Wartburg license plate, but Associate Director of Alumni and Parent Relations Renee Voves has a plate that reads “BEST4YRS.”

“Having a license plate not only shows your pride for the college but it also promotes Wartburg to others on the road and in parking lots,” Nuerhing said.

She said the bright orange rectangles on the front and back of alum’s vehicles serve as more than just a reminder of their college days.

“Participate, Provide, and Promote are the three “P’s” of U-Knight and what the alumni are encouraged to do after graduation,” Neurhing said. “Having a Wartburg College license plate is just one way to do that.”

She said the plates became popular in 2009. In that year, there were 200 alums with custom Wartburg license plates.

The license plates are $25 for a numbered plate or $50 for the plates with personalization. Wartburg license plates can be ordered through the website.
